To construct ones’ family tree in a direct line requires but curiosity. To research your grandparents becomes more complicated as some information such as dates and birthplaces must be verified. As for your great-grandparents, it becomes almost impossible to do without some form of support. Genealogists can accomplish this task in record time with great accuracy but what about the pleasure in discovering your roots on your own and possibly discovering that your neighbor is related to you! Here is a little exercise that we propose for you: Research your own basic family tree. If you are a Hamel, we would greatly appreciate that you would share your tree with us by returning it by postal mail or by e-mail . This would help us update our files. Thank-you and to the pleasure of reading your findings!
CONSTRUCTING YOUR FAMILY TREE
The first question you should ask yourself is:
What is the difference between an ascending and a descending family tree?
Ascending Family Tree |
Descending Family Tree |
It is constructed by starting with yourself going back to the ancestor. You find the simple tree(fathers’ family) and the complex family.(fathers’ and mothers’ family) . |
It is constructed by starting with your grandparents or great-grandparents and listing all their descendants.. |
We now arrive at the second question:
What should you look for?
-
Official papers (birth certificates, civil registers, passports, testaments)
-
Written documents (family books, military records, etc.)
-
Photographs
-
Tombstone inscriptions
-
Oral Testimonies (dates and oral history)
|
Third and last question:
What should you start with?
Why should we share information of our families? If your tree has 10 generations, you will have approximately 1022 names (men and women) in your tree. These people were probably established in Quebec but also everywhere throughout the world. This makes it extremely difficult to keep this information up to date. Imagine now all the descendants of Jean and Charles Hamel!
If you feel up to constructing your own family tree and you have some information concerning your family, you are ready to start. Here is an example of a worksheet in Word format, click on the link tableau.doc(french) . Never forget that:”The memory is a sense that forgets and that the written word remains”.
